You love snapping pictures of your cute kids doing something adorable, posting on Facebook or Instagram so your friends and family can see them without much thought, but you might want to stop and think about what you are putting out there
Here are 4 questions to ask yourself before sharing that next personal picture.
- Why are you sharing it? You should have a good reason before you send content out into the world. Get in the habit of asking this before every post.
- Would you want someone to share this about you? If you would be bummed if your parents shared that same picture of you, maybe you shouldn’t share the same image of your child. If your child is old enough, ask them – get their permission before posting anything online about them.
- Could your child be embarrassed by this now or in the future? It’s one thing to tell a new girl or boyfriend about an embarrassing story. It’s a whole other thing to send that information out into the world.
- Is this something you want to be part of your child’s digital footprint? Even if it’s not embarrassing, how does it paint your child? You’d probably like your child to come across as smart, well-behaved, industrious, kind, and successful, right? Does what you are posting help that – or hinder it?
It’s also a good idea to talk with your partner and other adults in your child’s life to make sure that everyone is on the same page. And once your children are old enough, talk to them about these same questions so they won’t be tempted to post embarrassing images of themselves or friends online. It’s a great opportunity to set family ground rules, and also talk about being good digital citizens. Because ultimately, that’s what this is about: being thoughtful, careful and kind.
