We got a chance to visit with our friends at @AZFamily last week about the top summer illnesses parents need to know about and ways to prevent and treat each one. Check out the link below for the full clip of our visit:
Summary
It’s summertime and the weather is HOT but attempts to cool off in streams, lakes and oceans could make some sick. Camping trips where ticks are prevalent as well as just common traveling puts families at risk all summer. Here are the top five summertime illnesses all parents should know about:
Swimmer’s Ear: Water gets trapped in the ear canal and gets infected from bacteria. It’s different from a typical ear infection which infects your middle ear. Swimmer’s ear is very painful but easy to treat and prevent.
Traveler’s Diarrhea: Top health concern for kids that travel in the summer. Caused simply by being around unfamiliar bacteria. Be careful! Diarrhea can also lead to dehydration!
Enterovirus: Typically causes respiratory illnesses and can also cause nervous system illnesses like hand, foot and mouths disease.
Food Poisoning: Summertime BBQs leave foods exposed to bacteria and contaminations longer than usual. There are several tips for handling food in the summer to help prevent kids from getting sick.
Mosquito-borne illnesses: Protect yourself from illnesses spread by mosquitos. Mosquitos thrive in warm, humid environments and the Arizona monsoon season creates ideal conditions for them to spread.
