Ah, summer and the great outdoors, they go together like chocolate and peanut butter, but if you’re not careful they can also lead to bug bites, lyme disease, and in certain cases serious issues like the West Nile virus. Luckily, there are some simple steps to take to prevent bites and diseases spread by bugs.
Don’t use scented soaps, perfumes, or hair sprays
Avoid areas where insects nest or congregate, like stagnant pools of water
Avoid dressing in bright colors or flowery prints
Combination sunscreen and insect repellent products should be avoided because the sunscreen needs to be reapplied every two hours, but the insect repellent shouldn’t be reapplied at all
But do use an effective insect repellent while playing outdoors
When outside in the evenings, cover up with a long sleeved shirt, long pants, and socks to prevent bites
Check your children, and yourself, for ticks before coming into the house
Make your backyard a tick-safe zone by keeping play areas away from shrubs, bushes, and other vegetation
By following simple prevention steps, parents and children can keep bugs away so they can focus of fun outdoor activities like gardening, hiking, bike riding, and just general playing.
